Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Improves Healing and Function

In addition to helping patients heal after surgery (Cosmetic surgery ie: breast lift, facial construction) and athletes recover from injuries and muscle fatigue, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides effective treatment for persistent medical conditions. Victims of stroke, multiple sclerosis, and other debilitating conditions can improve their functional and cognitive abilities by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood and tissues through mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Flooding the body with life-giving oxygen boosts the immune system, increases brain function, and helps cells and tissues heal and perform as they should. Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to increase eightfold the number of stem cells circulating in the body 1. Stem cells are specialized cells capable of modifying their form to assist in the repair of a variety of injured tissues, including those in the brain. At the Hyp02 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center, we provide mild oxygen therapy using the advanced Vitaeris 320 mild hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Our state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers are spacious and provide healing oxygen therapy in the most comfortable environment possible.

Stroke

A stroke is devastating both to the victim and to family members who must witness the sudden and dramatic transformation of a loved one from a fully functioning, vital individual to one who is significantly impaired. Traditional treatments for stroke victims typically rely on medications and physical therapy, while the proven efficacy of oxygen therapy has generally been overlooked. Researchers from Bar-Ilan University in Israel examined the results of clinical studies involving a total of 265 stroke patients at 11 different hyperbaric centers 2 . They found that significant clinical improvement of the patients' neurological status occurred as a result of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and that the benefit increased with the number of treatments given. Patients who had 30 or more treatments showed progressive improvement with each treatment.

If you are struggling to help a loved one who has suffered a stroke, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy at our Hyp02 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center may provide an effective way to facilitate recovery and improve symptoms. Our spacious hyperbaric chambers can accommodate two adults, so if you wish, you may accompany your loved one while he or she receives oxygen treatment. Contact us today to schedule a consultation or make an appointment to begin oxygen therapy for the treatment of a stroke.

Multiple Sclerosis

While mild hyperbaric oxygen treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) has recently been gaining recognition in the United States, it is a mainstay in other parts of the world. In England, where oxygen therapy has been used to treat MS for over 30 years, there are currently more than 100 hyperbaric centers treating more than 10,000 patients. To date, more than 1.5 million oxygen therapy treatments for MS have been performed. The results of a 10-year study of 700 MS patients in England, conducted by D.J.D. Perrins and P.B. James and published in the Proceedings of the Twelfth International Congress of Hyperbaric Medicine: A 13 year Update, showed that oxygen therapy delivers numerous long-term benefits to MS patients.

In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine 3, researchers found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy improved a variety of MS symptoms in 70 percent of the patients studied. A follow-up examination one year later revealed that deterioration occurred in only 12 percent of patients who received oxygen therapy, as compared to 55 percent of patients who did not receive treatments.

Research has shown that the inflammation typical of MS significantly impairs the delivery of oxygen by the blood. An “MS flair” can cause a severe depletion of oxygen to the affected areas, limiting the body's ability to reduce swelling and inhibit scar or plaque formation. Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy floods tissues and blood with healing oxygen so that the body can counteract the effects of MS symptoms. Because blood cells become more malleable when they are saturated with oxygen, they can traverse constricted blood vessels more easily to deliver oxygen to injury sites, thereby speeding the healing process. Breathing 100 percent oxygen under hyperbaric conditions causes the dilated, leaking blood vessels caused by MS to return to normal size, and it reduces the swelling that can lead to cell death. If you or a loved one suffers from MS, we encourage you to try mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment. Join the many thousands who have benefited from this effective treatment.

Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's Disease is one of the cruelest sentences that can be imposed on an individual as he or she enters the golden years of life. The victim slowly, inevitably loses mental ability and cognizance of everything and everyone he or she has known and loved. Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer's by greatly increasing the oxygen levels that are so vital to the function of the brain and nervous system. Brain imaging scans have demonstrated the effectiveness of oxygen therapy in revitalizing blood flow to cortical tissues and increasing brain function. Because of its proven ability to increase the production of stem cells, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy will likely play an integral role in the development of an effective stem cell treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy afflicts more than 500,000 people in the United States, and every year more than 4,500 new cases are diagnosed. The condition results from damage to the motor areas of the brain, which leads to an inability to control body movements. Studies conducted both in the United States and abroad have strongly suggested that increased delivery of oxygen to the brain via mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy may reduce the spasticity associated with cerebral palsy.

It has been theorized that the neurological damage that leads to cerebral palsy does not result in complete cell death in the injured area. Some cells, it is postulated, receive enough oxygen to stay alive, but not enough to function. Oxygen therapy exponentially increases the amount of available free oxygen in the blood. Increased oxygen to the brain may "jump start" oxygen-starved cells and help to return motor control to the patient. If your child or another family member suffers from cerebral palsy, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy at our Hyp02 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center may be beneficial for the treatment of symptoms. Our hyperbaric chambers do not restrict movement, and they are large enough to allow you to join your child or family member during treatment. Special-Needs Children — Autism, ADD, ADHD

If you have a special-needs child who suffers from autism, ADD, or ADHD, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy may provide benefits. Studies have suggested that autistic children may have reduced regional cerebral blood flow. Thus, they may have decreased oxygen available for cognitive functioning. Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly increases oxygen tissue saturation and the levels of oxygen available for uptake by the brain.

Environmental toxins have been linked to ADD and ADHD and are thought to exacerbate the symptoms of these conditions. Oxygen acts as a cleansing agent in the body, flushing out toxins and helping cells and tissues to heal from their harmful effects. In addition, increasing the availability of oxygen to the brain through mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy enhances cognitive functioning. Brain scans have shown significantly increased brain function in subjects who have undergone hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Some parents of special-needs children who have undergone mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy have reported that their children are calmer, have fewer mood swings, have better bowel function, and sleep better, among other benefits. We have found that many children enjoy and look forward to their mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments. If you are the parent of a special-needs child and are considering mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you will be reassured to know that our hyperbaric chambers are large and roomy enough to allow you to join your child during oxygen therapy. You can read to your child, play a game, or watch a video with your child on one of our portable DVD players during the treatment. Our staff will provide calming support to you and your child throughout your visit with us so that your oxygen therapy experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
